The Benefits of an open wardrobe.

One of the best reasons to have an open wardrobe is that I have to look at all my clothes every day. I can continually monitor what I am wearing and what I am not wearing which in turn helps me to acquire clothing more consciously, so from a sustainability standpoint, it is very helpful. When I am in the market for new clothes (which is getting rarer the older I get) I find it easier to visualize what I have and what goes with what. It has also become easier to put aside items that I no longer wear for whatever reason as they are always there in front of me and not stashed in the back somewhere collecting dust. Another more obvious, boring reason why I like having all my clothes on display is that I have to keep it tidy. It has its moments - believe me, but it always gets to a point where I must hang everything up to function.

What I want to get to eventually is a more minimal wardrobe and having an open wardrobe will help with that. Project333 asks you to wear only 33 items in 3 months, which is harder than it sounds depending on your lifestyle. Some billionaires and people occupying high powered positions also take the minimal wardrobe approach for other reasons and I think the best one I’ve read is to avoid decision fatigue. People like Bill Gates often have a lot of important decisions to make and picking out an outfit to wear is a trivial time-wasting one. This is the reason why most billionaires wear plain clothes. President Obama said is best when he said, “You’ll see I wear only grey or blue suits. I’m trying to pare down decisions. I don’t want to make decisions about what I am eating or wearing because I have too many other decisions to make.”

Over the years I have found myself as a working woman, mother and creative entrepreneur to sometimes feel that I have too many decisions or issues to deal with and it can, at times, feel too much. With a couple of good basics, I think it should be possible to remove the trivial decision of getting dressed every day and focus on things that carry much more weight.

Maybe not getting wardrobes is one of the best things I’ve ever done?

*The picture included with this post is my actual wardrobe as it stands, although I do have a box full of trackies and hoodies that I wear around the house that isn’t included here.
